When it comes to our beauty routines most of us consider ourselves to be well-versed in what works and what doesn’t. Unfortunately, with thousands of tips and tricks on the internet, it’s difficult to determine what’s true and what isn’t. So, we decided to sit down with our Lead Esthetics Educator, Amanda, to talk about five common beauty myths and set the record straight once and for all.
Myth 1: Oily Skin Doesn’t Need Hydration
Oily skin can occur when the skin is stripped by using alcohols. Keeping your skin clear and clean is important, but you must keep it hydrated with a moisturizer. When we strip the skin of its natural oils, the body actually produces more oil to compensate. If you have oily skin, balance is key. You want to cleanse your skin with a gentle, non-foaming cleanser followed by an oil-free moisturizer.
Myth 2: Not Everyone Can Pull Off A Red Lip
While many people think they don’t have the skin tone to wear a bold red lip, this is simply untrue. It’s all about the undertone of the red. If you have a yellow undertone to your skin, look for orange or coral undertones in your lipstick or gloss. For a pink or blue skin tone, choose a cool shade of red with a pink or blue base. The trick is to find the right red for you! Try out a few different shades, or stop by the Academy and we can help to match you with the perfect color for those days when you want to add a little drama to your look.
Myth 3: I Can Use My Moisturizer As An Eye Cream
While you might be tempted to just slather moisturizer all over your face and call it good, this does nothing for the area around your eyes. The pores around your eyes are smaller than the pores on the rest of your face. Eye creams have a smaller molecular structure to allow for penetration in this delicate area. While moisturizers won’t harm the area around your eyes, they won’t deliver any benefits because the smaller-sized pores cannot absorb the ingredients.
Myth 4: The SPF In My Foundation Is Enough To Protect Me From The Sun
Although the SPF in your foundation is beneficial, it would take several layers to actually provide enough protection from the sun’s damaging rays. Since we know applying layers on layers of foundation would not look good (or be cost-effective) you need to add an extra SPF to your daily routine. If you, like most of us, hate adding multiple steps in the morning, choose a moisturizer with SPF to save precious time that you could spend sleeping in.
Myth 5: I Don’t Need To Wash My Face At Night If I Don’t Wear Makeup
Even on those lazy Sunday’s when you don’t wear makeup, you still have to wash your face before bed. While you won’t have makeup to wash off, your face is still dirty. Our skin secretes oils that need to be cleansed away, as well as debris and pollution that is present in the air around you. Furthermore, anything that touches your face, namely, your hair and hands transmit dirt and oil. The combination of these factors leads to a dirty face at the end of the day. You want to cleanse your pores each night to prevent the buildup of debris. While you sleep, your skin heals and rejuvenates itself. This helps to keep your skin smooth and luminous. Going to bed with a dirty face inhibits this process. Taking just a few minutes each night to cleanse your face makes a substantial difference in the long run.
